Frances Dolan Endeavour Award 2024

Our Endeavour Award is dedicated to the amazing Frances Dolan who was a Family Support Officer for West Scotland Deaf Children’s Society for many years up until late 2021. Frances was the charity’s Honorary President. This award carries her name to recognise her incredible contribution in supporting deaf children, young people and their families.

This year, Sophie Carruthers was nominated by all the staff of Elderbank Primary. Sophie has been doing a fantastic job in raising Deaf Awareness in her school, Brownies, Football and the wider community.  In school, Sophie helped to train staff and talked about her communication needs in an after-school Deaf Awareness session.  Sophie also helped staff to make a video about Deaf Awareness, sharing her thoughts and ideas and helped other children to take part. She is very passionate about Deaf Awareness, British Sign Language and the rights of Deaf people.

  • Sophie is very passionate about her Deaf identity and is a great role model for other deaf children.
  • She is always ready to speak up for herself and helps everyone feel included.
  • Sophie and her family have also done lots of fundraising for our charity, to help other boys and girls that need us. This year will be Sophie’s 4th time taking part in the Kiltwalk!
  • Sophie has said that she would like to be a Teacher of the Deaf when she grows up or work for a Deaf organisation and we can’t think of anybody better to do these jobs. She’s a superstar!

Congratulations Sophie!!!
