The right to understand
Everyone has the right to understand – and be understood.
Communication is a shared responsibility. It shouldn’t fall on deaf people alone.
We want to shine a light on the everyday barriers deaf people face and encourage all of us to think differently about communication, accessibility and inclusion.
By working together, we can break down barriers and create spaces where everyone feels informed, included and connected.
The problem
Everyday situations can still create barriers, like:
- No BSL interpreters when they’re needed
- Limited or poor-quality subtitles
- Environments that aren’t inclusive in schools or workplaces
These aren’t small issues. They can lead to missed opportunities, isolation, and people being left out.
What you can do
Small actions make a big difference:
- Learn a few basic BSL signs – or build your skills over time
- Keep communication clear and visible
- Ask how someone prefers to communicate
- Make your workplace or school more inclusive
