Our history
Activities for deaf children and their families over the years have included family weekends, Saturday morning clubs, family signing classes, summer trips, Youth Club with Deaf Connections, sports days, football tournaments, Christmas parties and parents’ events.
We are looking forward to the charity’s 80th anniversary in 2027!
1947
The charity was founded by a small group of concerned parents of deaf children.
Originally named NDCS West Scotland, the charity shared offices with the Society for the Deaf and the John Ross Church in West Regent Street in Glasgow.
1991
After a short stay in Robertson Street, the charity moved to Norfolk Street beside Deaf Connections
1970s
The May Neeson Cup for Endeavour was established in honour of one of the founding members of the society.
This is now called the Frances Dolan Endeavour Award. Frances was employed by the Society then became a Trustee.
1992
The charity became West Scotland Deaf Children’s Society (WSDCS) in 1992. Veronica Rattray, after working as a manager for NDCS Scotland, became Honorary Secretary when May Neeson retired.
The Society is a registered charity (No. SC012285) and is affiliated to the National Deaf Children's Society.
1995
In 1995, WSDCS moved premises to Central Chambers on Hope Street where the charity grew and developed into what it represents today. WSDCS moved into its current premises at 281a Central Chambers, offices which had been lying empty for 40 years!
Early 2000s
The charity was supported financially by the National Lottery from 2003 - 2009.
At this time, the Vice Chairperson was Raymond Hendry and the Treasurer was John Gilmour.
